The end of Ramadan: Iftar in Delft
I am a lucky person. For some reason I always manage to end up in the most interesting situations. As was the case last Saturday. For the Turkish community their month of fasting came to an end and to celebrate the fast breaking (or iftar) for the last time this year, a dinner was organized by the local Turkish community in Delft (The Netherlands) for anybody who was interested.
And people were interested, the community center attached to the local mosque was filled to the brim. Most of the people attending were either of Turkish or Dutch decent, nevertheless a variety of other backgrounds could also be found.
All the food had been prepared by volunteers and was served by a group of Turkish youngsters. The evening was hosted in flawless Dutch by a man of Turkish origin and two traditional singers and a sufi dancer completed the event.
The evening was wonderful. A friendly atmosphere allowed for easy chatter between all present and the youngsters responsible for the serving of the food showed (once again I would like to add) that most of the bad press youngsters of non-Dutch decent have been receiving is ill-deserved.
After an evening like this I cannot help but comment again on the so called impossibility of a multicultural society, but I will refrain myself this time. Suffice to say that a taste of something as exotic as the sufi dancing makes me think about my next vacation.
